WALLETS Marts sold 465 store heifers in Castle Douglas on Monday to a top of £1,170 per head and 281.7p per kg to average £843.82 and 230p (+6.3p on the fortnight), while 723 store bullocks peaked at £1,370 and 295.9p to level at £897.35 and 238.7p (+8.9p).

The firm went on to sell 184 prime hoggs at the same venue yesterday to a top of £126 per head and 269.6p per kg to average 226.8p (+23.5p on the week).

Cast sheep were also sharper on the week with 114 heavy ewes selling to £118 for Texels and averaging £86.20, while 39 light/export-type ewes peaked at £68 for Blackfaces and levelled at £48.46.

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 14 prime heifers at Ayr yesterday to a top of £1324.95 per head and 248p per kg to average £1210 and 227p, while a prime bullock fetched £1392 or 240p.

In the rough ring the trade was similar to last week with 65 beef cows averaging 139.7p and 83 dairy cows levelling at 113.1p. Five bulls averaged 120.4p and 18 clean OTM cattle levelled at 158.7p.

A poorer show of 11 dairy cattle sold to £1350 for a second-calved Holstein Friesian and averaged £1101.
