THE new chair of the Institute of Directors north of the Border has highlighted how much he values what Scotland has to offer.

Aidan O’Carroll, senior partner at accountancy firm EY (Ernst & Young), was yesterday named as the successor to Professor Susan Deacon as chair of the IoD in Scotland. Ms Deacon has completed her three-year term in the role.

Mr O’Carroll, a tax specialist, will also take up the Scottish seat on the IoD’s UK Council, succeeding Ian McKay.

Ms Deacon said: “Aidan is an ideal successor in the role of IoD chair. He has his finger on the pulse of business, and is wholly committed to Scotland, its growth and its place on the international stage. I wish him every success over the next three years.”

Mr O’Carroll said: “I have had the privilege of living [in] Scotland all of my life and working both here and internationally for over 30 years. However far afield my work has taken me, I have always been able to keep my home in Scotland because I value what we have here.”

He added: “The opportunity to be a part of an organisation that can help bring greater success to Scotland, shape our economic proposition, engage with government to promote growth, and bring together diverse views on the common theme of leadership, is hugely exciting.”

IoD Scotland declared that Mr O’Carroll’s experience meant he was well-placed to understand the challenges faced by businesses, large and small.

Mr O’Carroll, citing his intention to get to the heart of what members valued most, said: “The leadership community in Scotland is a very broad church with public, private and third sector leaders all facing key challenges around growth and building success alongside the vital pillars of ethics, governance and integrity.”
