THE new owners of the Brunswick Hotel in Glasgow’s Merchant City have unveiled plans for a major refurbishment.

Khurshied Alam and his son, Imran, have also highlighted their ambitions to acquire another city-centre hotel within the next few years, flagging the vibrancy of Glasgow’s hospitality sector.

Alam Investments, which previously owned the Clifton Hotel in Glasgow’s west end, bought the Brunswick Hotel recently in a seven-figure deal backed by funding from Allied Irish Bank (GB).

The father-and-son team is overseeing the 22-room refurbishment, which they expect to be completed later in the year.

They plan to add an additional four rooms by converting the existing penthouse suite.

Khurshied Alam said: “We had been looking for a city centre hotel for a number of years, and when the Brunswick Hotel came up we were immediately interested.

“Its location made it a very attractive prospect. The team at Allied Irish Bank (GB) visited the hotel and agreed that it had great potential, which was reassuring. We’re now in the midst of renovations and already have had a busy summer.”

Highlighting ambitions for expansion, he added: “Glasgow has a vibrant hospitality and property scene, and we’ll be looking for a second city-centre hotel in the near future.”

Barry Rodger, of Allied Irish Bank (GB), said: “Khurshied is a hands-on operator with a track record for successful hospitality businesses.

“We are proud to support his latest venture with the acquisition and refurbishment of the Brunswick Hotel.”

Mr Rodger added: “We understand the landscape that hoteliers work in.”

Commercial banking operation Allied Irish Bank (GB) noted that its dedicated sector lending funds were directed towards businesses operating in the manufacturing, healthcare, hotels and hospitality, and professional practice sectors.
