In a spin for charity

Social Bite Village in Edinburgh, part of the homeless project that has been backed by Prince Harry and George Clooney, welcomed its first residents recently.

Scott Inglis, commercial director at Fishers Laundry, had been speaking to his contacts at the village and was so impressed with the set up there that he wanted to help the charity with their laundry cleaning.

He offered to donate a washing machine to the village and even managed to convince media and PR firm Spreng Thomson to donate one as well.

Callum Spreng, Spreng Thomson managing director, said: “We don’t usually get involved with spin but this was too good an opportunity to miss, partnering with our client, Fishers Laundry Group, in supporting this great charity.”

Screeching ahead

ENCOURAGING girls to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is a major focus for many in the business world these days, including Edinburgh-based Jumpstart.

The firm, which advises businesses on R&D (research and development) tax relief, is sponsoring an all-female team from Linlithgow Academy to compete at an international STEM event in Singapore, based on Formula 1, in September.

As part of the competition, the Linlithgow team designed a CO2-powered model F1 car using 3D CAD, which raced down a track at speeds of 40mph. After progressing through the Scottish stages, the team competed at the UK finals at Silverstone in March where they won 1st place in the Development Class and picked up the award for the fastest car, securing their place in Singapore.

Jumpstart managing director Scott Henderson said: “As a business that is focused on helping others leverage innovation, we are delighted to support the Linlithgow Academy F1 in Schools team.

“Not only are they flying the flag for Scotland in the world finals, they are also serving as ambassadors by promoting the abilities of young women in STEM-related pursuits. We wish them the very best of luck when they travel to Singapore in September and hope they will secure a famous victory for the UK.”

Jumpstart is supporting the with a £1,000 donation to help cover the costs of attending the F1 in Schools World Finals.
