EDINBURGH Airport has revealed it handled more than 1.5 million passengers in a single month for the first time ever in July.

Passenger numbers, at 1.502 million last month, were up by 6.3 per cent on July 2017.

International passenger growth was particularly strong. However, Edinburgh Airport also noted a solid rise in domestic passenger numbers, citing the contributions of Flybe and easyJet. The airport said yesterday that it had handled 1.003 million international passengers last month – 7.3% more than in July 2017.

Domestic passenger numbers totalled 498,699 in July, up by 4.3% on the same month of last year.

Airport chief executive Gordon Dewar said: “These are fantastic figures for the airport, for Edinburgh and for Scotland, and they show an increase in passenger demand of 60% over the past five years.”

In terms of international traffic, Edinburgh Airport noted budget airline Ryanair last month flew 13 routes from the Scottish capital that were not in operation in July 2017.

The routes launched by Ryanair since July last year are Budapest, Carcassonne, Eindhoven, Baden-Baden (Karlsruhe), Hamburg, Katowice, Nantes, Prague, Szczecin, Toulouse, Venice Treviso, Valencia, and Wroclaw.

Edinburgh Airport said United’s new Washington DC service was “proving to be very popular with strong passenger numbers”.
