LAWRIE & Symington Ltd held their annual sale of Blackface ewes and gimmers in Lanark yesterday when Hugh and Alan Blackwood, Auldhouseburn received the top price of £3,200 apiece for their pen of three Blackface gimmers. This was followed by a pen of six from Alistair and David MacArthur, Nunnerie that realised £1,050. The 1,581 gimmers sold averaged £127.66 (-£23.32 on the year).

J Wight & Sons, Midlock topped the ewe section at £660 for a pen of eight, with the final average for the 1,767 sold levelling at £85.93 (+£11.01).

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 20 prime heifers at Ayr yesterday to a top of £1,432.95 per head and 240p per kg to average £1,221.25 and 227.6p.

In the rough ring 84 beef cows averaged 117.8p and 115 dairy cows levelled at 86.3p. Nine bulls averaged 104p and 11 clean OTM cattle levelled at 137.9p.

There were also nine dairy cattle that sold to £1,850 for a Holstein Friesian heifer and averaged £1202.

Wallets Marts sold 1,040 prime lambs in Castle Douglas yesterday to a top of £85 per head and 190p per kg to average 169.8p (no change on the week).

The 337 heavy cast ewes forward averaged £66.64, while 50 light/export-type ewes levelled at £32.29.
