AN EDINBURGH business whose wearable security cameras are used by police forces across the UK has been bought out by a US artificial intelligence and data analytics company.

California-based Vigilant Solutions said it had acquired 16-year old Edesix, which was previously backed by investment house Panoramic Growth Equity, to make its first entry into the body worn and in-car camera markets.

Vigilant’s founder Shawn Smith said the deal would put the company “in the position to offer public safety a full suite of image capture solutions, both in the US and internationally”.

While Edesix’s technology will be sold under the Vigilant banner in America, the company will continue to trade under its own name elsewhere, with chief executive Richie McBride saying the acquisition will enable the company to continue to expand.

“In terms of how things will change on a daily basis, it will be very much business as usual,” he said.

“Our management team will remain the same and our branding will remain as Edesix outwith the US.

“There will be no redundancies, and we hope in time the acquisition will facilitate an expansion to our team.”

Edesix, which was founded by Mr McBride and Robin Iddon in 2002, received a £750,000 cash injection from Panoramic four years ago.

They said at the time that they intended to capitalise on booming demand around the world for video equipment that can be used for law enforcement and to help protect people working on their own in potentially risky situations.

The company’s products include a video camera that is incorporated into an identity badge.
