Cost of children

HEATHER McGregor, executive dean of the Edinburgh business school at Heriot-Watt University, showed she has lost none of the humour that made her a popular newspaper columnist.

Speaking at The Herald Budget Briefing on Tuesday, Ms McGregor reminded the audience of how she would refer to her three children in her regular articles. “Anyone who read my Sunday Times column – Miss Moneypenny – will know I call my children Cost Centre 1, 2 and 3,” she said.

Golf pairing

AS pairings go, whisky and golf fit as comfortably as Torvill and Dean. So, it was perhaps not the greatest surprise to see Loch Lomond Distillers, the official spirit of The Open, expand its links with the ancient game.

Loch Lomond has added former Open champion Darren Clarke to its burgeoning roster of ambassadors. It comes ahead of what will be a particularly sweet Open Championship for Clarke next year, when the tournament is staged at his much-loved Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.

Hot pursuit

BACK with Heather McGregor, the business school dean made a humorous admission when mulling how the Scottish finance minister might spend any extra money coming his way as a result of the Budget.

“I got quite a shock when Derek Mackay followed me on Twitter,” she quipped. “I wondered what I’d done!”
