Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd had 1664 prime lambs forward at Ayr yesterday when nice, leaner ones were dearer on the week, while fatter types met a similar trade. Top prices on the day were £94 per head and 207.9p per kg with the final average levelling at 167.3p (+2.2p on the week).
Cast sheep were also dearer on the week with 331 heavy ewes selling to £124 for a Suffolk and averaging £60.24, while 211 light/export-type ewes peaked at £75 for Cheviots and levelled at £35.61.
Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold 53 prime heifers in St Boswells yesterday to a top of 261p per kg and an average of 215.5p (-1p), while 28 prime bullocks peaked at 239p and levelled at 209.2p (-2p).
In the rough ring 70 beef cows sold to 177p and averaged 108p (+1p).
There were also 1502 prime lambs that sold to £100 and 230p to average 174p (+4p).
The 239 cast sheep forward saw heavy ewes sell to £109 for Suffolk crosses and average £76, while light ewes peaked at £81 for Cheviot crosses and levelled at £41.
The firm also sold 18 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 236.5p and an average of 198p (+21.2p), while 26 prime bullocks peaked at 230.5p and levelled at 197.5p (-13.3p). Thirty-nine prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 233.5p and averaged 196.5p (-0.7p), while 32 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 179.5p and levelled at 155.9p (-9.3p).
In the rough ring 110 beef cows sold to 179.5p and averaged 106.3p (-15.1p), while 219 dairy cows peaked at 157.5p and levelled at 83.4p (-3.9p). Fourteen bulls sold to 163.5p and averaged 95.4p (+4.1p).
There were also 1649 prime lambs that sold to £99.80 and 245.4p to average 172.8p (-1.1p).
Cast sheep were also easier on the week with 74 heavy ewes selling to £88.50 for Texels and averaging £63.70, while 104 light ewes peaked at £55.50 for Blackfaces and levelled at £22.24.
Lawrie & Symington Ltd sold 30 prime heifers in Lanark yesterday to a top of 270p and an average of 249p (+7p), while 9 prime bullocks peaked at 252p and levelled at 242p (+7p). Five prime bulls averaged 190p (no comparison).
In the rough ring 34 beef cows averaged 107p (+1p) and 34 dairy cows levelled at 86p (+4p).
There were also 2028 prime lambs that sold to £96 and 225p to average 173.5p (+3.5p).
A good show of cast sheep saw 394 heavy ewes sell to £152 for a Texel and average £65.76, while 246 light ewes peaked at £62 for a Cheviot and levelled at £42.60.
