MESSRS Craig Wilson Ltd had 1,832 prime lambs forward at Ayr yesterday to a top of £90 per head and 215p per kg to average 175.2p (+7.9p on the week).

A good show of cast sheep saw better types of ewes and Blackfaces also much sharper on the week, although fat Mules met a similar trade. The 227 heavy ewes that went under the auctioneer's hammer sold to £159 for Texels and averaged £73.20, while 310 light/export-type ewes sold to £76.50 for Cheviots and levelled at £39.66.

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold 54 prime heifers in St Boswells yesterday to a top of 243p per kg and an average of 210p (-10p), while 18 prime bullocks also peaked at 243p but levelled at 211p (+2p).

In the rough ring 65 beef cows sold to 174p and averaged 111p (+3p).

There were also 1,305 prime lambs that sold to £108.50 and 241.1p to average 176p (+2p).

The 472 cast sheep forward saw heavy ewes average £70 and light ewes level at £38.

The firm also held their Christmas show and sale of prime-stock in Carlisle yesterday when 23 prime heifers sold to a top of 269.5p and an average of 230.4p (+32.3p), while 15 prime bullocks peaked at 300.5p and levelled at 223p (+25.5p). Sixty-eight prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 238.5p and averaged 187.1p (-9.4p), while 36 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 181.5p and levelled at 161.1p (+5.2p).

In the rough ring 201 beef cows sold to 211.5p and averaged 121.6p (+15.2p), while 237 dairy cows peaked at 159.5p and levelled at 85.3p (+1.9p). Nine bulls sold to 174.5p and averaged 103.2p (+7.7p).

There were also 1,460 prime lambs that sold to £550 and 964.9p to average 182p (+9.1p).

A modest show of cast sheep saw 110 heavy ewes sell to £131.50 for Beltex and average £72.48, while 21 light ewes peaked at £95.50 for a Hill Cheviot and levelled at £48.71.

Lawrie & Symington Ltd sold 45 prime heifers at their Christmas show and sale of prime cattle in Lanark yesterday to a top of 340p for the champion from T&A Taylor, Heatheryhall Farm, Lanark and an average of 246p (-3p), while 20 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 254p and levelled at 239p (-3p). Fifteen prime, B&W bullocks sold to 160p and averaged 148p (no change). Five prime bulls averaged 195p (+5p).

In the rough ring 31 beef cows averaged 103p (-4p) and 39 dairy cows levelled at 87p (+1p).

There were also 1,539 prime lambs that sold to £95 and 230p to average 173p (-0.5p).

Cast sheep met a dearer trade on the week with 351 heavy ewes selling to £149 for a Texel and averaging £69.53, while 406 light ewes peaked at £57 for a Blackface and levelled at £43.50.
