MESSRS Craig Wilson Ltd sold 16 prime heifers at Ayr yesterday to a top of 240p per kg and an average of 216.1p, while a prime bullock fetched 218p.

In the rough ring 77 beef cows sold to 153.2p and averaged 108.7p, while 90 dairy cows peaked at 106p and levelled at 91.9p. Ten bulls sold to 132p and averaged 105.5p, while five clean OTM cattle peaked at 140.6p and levelled at 127.4p.

A small show of eight dairy cattle sold to £2,080 for a Holstein Friesian heifer and averaged £1,640.44.

The firm also held its monthly sale of beef-breeding cattle when the top prices and averages were as follows: Cows and heifers with calf-at-foot to a top of £1,250 and an average of £1,145 for 8; in-calf cows £1,000 and £790 for 4; bulling heifers £1,200 and £953.33 for 18.

Wallets Marts sold 1460 prime hoggs in Castle Douglas yesterday to a top of £107 per head and 264.9p per kg to average 200.8p (+15.2p on the corresponding sale last year).

Cast sheep met a stronger demand with 295 eavy ewes selling to £136 for Beltex and averaging £51.47, while 81 light/export-type ewes peaked at £46 for Blackfaces and levelled at £35.72.
