First Milk has announced that its standard litre milk price will increase by 0.25ppl from April 1, 2019 to 27.75ppl for the liquid standard litre or 28.68ppl for the manufacturing standard litre. This increase reflects First Milk’s commitment to pay a new, previously announced, member premium of 0.25ppl from April 1st to the majority of members who have reached their capital target.

Jim Baird, Vice Chairman and Farmer Director of First Milk, said: “The markets remain uncertain but, despite this, we have been able to deliver these additional returns by delivering on our growth strategy. This additional member premium payment rewards our members for their loyalty, and we remain focused on continuing to develop our business to deliver long term prosperity for our members.”

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 17 prime heifers at Ayr on Tuesday to a top of £1580 per head and 234p/kg to average £1180 or 204p.

In the rough ring all classes were firmer on the week with 29 beef cows selling to £1170 and average 122p, while 77 dairy cows peaked at £1020 and levelled at 94p/kg. Five bulls sold to £1490 and 170p to average 134p, while 3 clean cattle peaked at £1300 and 174p to level at 161p.

The 3 dairy cattle sold up to £1820 for a strong Holstein Friesian heifer.

Wallets Marts Ltd sold 634 prime hoggs in Castle Douglas on Tuesday to a top of £92 per head and 213p/ kg for Texels and averaged 172.3p (-12p on the week).

Cast sheep were a sharper trade on the week with 166 heavy ewes selling to £98.50 for Texels and averaging £57.53, while 178 light/export-type ewes peaked at £55 for Blackfaces and levelled at £38.57.

C&D Auction Marts Ltd had forward an entry of 2,115 store hoggs and feeding ewes at Longtown on Tuesday.

Top price for store hoggs was £86 for Beltex; Texels to £80, Suffolks to £72.50, North Cheviots to £82.50, Hill Cheviots to £78.50, Charollais to £78, Romneys to £72.50, Greyfaces to £74, Cheviot Mule to £76, Blackfaces to £69, Swaledales to £52.50 and Herdwicks to £46.

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd had 1264 prime hoggs forward at their weekly sale in Newton Stewart yesterday. Top prices on the day were £94 per head for Beltex crosses and 212p/kg with the overall average levelling at 175p (-9p on the week). The 720 Blackface hoggets at the sale averaged 172.2p/kg peaking at £87.50 for a pen of 9 scaling at 52kg.

A smaller show of cast sheep were a similar trade on the week with 48 heavy ewes selling to £76 for Texel crosses and averaging £63.82, while 85 light/export-type ewes peaked at £56 for Blackfaces and levelled at £44.13.
