Edwyn’s star

APPLIED Engineering Design was forced to be at its creative best when it was commissioned to work for one of Scotland’s biggest musical stars.

The Edinburgh firm has just completed work for Edwyn Collins, solo artist and former Orange Juice frontman, on his new studio in Helmsdale, Sutherland.

It was something of a labour of love for Tim Hetherington, director of Applied Engineering Design, who worked as a musician before setting up the firm.

Mr Hetherington said: “It was anything but a straightforward build. For a start, the site was on a slope and the building has two crescent-shaped interlocking studio rooms with an ancillary wing and accommodation.”

Happily it all worked out in the end, and, as Edwyn might say, there was no need to rip it up and start again…

Summit speakers

ENTREPRENEURIAL Scotland has unveiled two more speakers who will grace the stage at its forthcoming summit in Gleneagles.

The business development organisation has added David S Rose, chief executive of global financing platform Gust, and Charlie MacGregor, boss of The Student Hotel chain, to the line-up of the event, which takes place at the Perthshire resort on April 25.

ES has previously announced that Stefani Grosse of Jo Fairley of Green & Black’s, sportswear firm Monreal London, and Steven Gray of subsea vehicle services firm ROVOP will be speaking.
