More than 1,700 staff at high street retailer The Entertainer are to share a record £3 million in bonuses after the group notched up a 31 per cent surge in annual profits.

The toy company - which recently bought the Early Learning Centre (ELC) from Mothercare - announced the bonus cheer after profits jumped to £15.1m thanks to a 12.3% increase in like-for-like sales over the year to January 28.

The firm, which has stores across Scotland, also saw online sales leap 38% higher at TheToyShop.com.

The group's bonus compares with £1.9m paid out the previous year.

As well as its staff bonus, The Entertainer also said it was making charitable donations of £1.6m after the rise in annual profits, with total donations at £2.7m thanks also to payroll giving, "pennies" and carrier bag donations.

Its results come after the deal was announced last week to buy the ELC business from Mothercare for up to £13.5m.

The Herald: SPRING IMPROVEMENT: Ted Baker has reported strong sales

Profit before tax was down 26.1 per cent to £50.9 million in the 52 weeks to January 26.

Group revenue was 4.4% higher at £617.4m, thanks to growing sales across the UK, Europe and North America.

The results come at the end of a challenging year for the company, which has taken its toll on the balance sheet, and which saw the departure of chief executive and founder Ray Kelvin.

Engineering firm Renishaw's shares have plunged after it lowered its profit expectations, due to dwindling demand in Asia.

The company, which employs 2,800 people in the UK, said adjusted profit before tax for the full year is now expected to be between £117 million and £135m, compared to a previously guided range of £140m to £160m.

Shares in Renishaw dropped 12.3 per cent in early trading on Thursday.
