GLASGOW company M Squared Lasers has been selected to join the latest cohort of the UK Government-backed Tech Nation’s prestigious Future Fifty programme.

M Squared, which develops photonic and quantum technologies aimed at enabling new applications and industries and addressing challenges facing society, is one of 24 companies joining the two-year Future Fifty programme. These firms are joining 26 businesses from the 2018 cohort.

Graeme Malcolm, chief executive and founder at M Squared Lasers, highlighted the company’s use of the “world’s purest light” to help measure global atmospheric pollution and climate-change gases, microscopically image degenerative brain diseases and realise the potential of quantum computing.

Future Fifty was established in 2013 to champion and support late-stage UK technology businesses as they scale up operations at home and abroad. Programme alumni include Edinburgh flight search engine pioneer Skyscanner and food delivery business Deliveroo.

Each company chosen for the 2019 cohort will benefit from access to the world’s leading experts, Tech Nation said, describing this as “a powerful peer network to support and inspire, troubleshoot and collaborate”. The programme also offers masterclasses and contact with senior decision-makers in government. Tech Nation noted its visa team helped companies on the programme access the best global talent.

It said Future Fifty alumni had been “strikingly successful at raising funds”, with companies taking part in the programme between 2013 and 2018 having raised a combined $8bn via venture capital funding and capital markets.
