GLASGOW-based patent and trademark attorney firm Murgitroyd has appointed a corporate big-hitter to its board as it eyes expansion.

Willie MacDiarmid became Murgitroyd’s deputy chairman on April 1 after holding big jobs with prominent businesses such as Scottish Power.

The company said it was delighted to attract someone with Mr MacDiarmid’s wealth of expertise and experience to its board.

After announcing the £6.6 million takeover of Southampton-based Chapman IP in February, Aim- market-listed Murgitroyd underlined its growth ambitions.

The company said then then it was trading satisfactorily in challenging conditions, noting uncertainty around how the UK leaving the EU might affect the European marketplace and IP systems.

Murgitroyd highlighted the potential to use further acquisitions to supplement organic growth and said it would look beyond its current core business in Europe and the USA to consider opportunities in Asia and Australasia.

Mr MacDiarmid enjoyed a near 20 year career at Scottish Power and headed the firm’s retail arm when the group was acquired by Iberdrola in 2006.

He became chief operating officer of the Eaga energy services business before running infrastructure support specialist May Gurney and Barchester Healthcare.

Mr MacDiarmid is chairman of Glasgow-based Smart Metering Systems, the Fallago Rig Windfarm venture and the Ogilvie construction to information technology group.

He succeeded Edward Murgitroyd as deputy chairman.of the eponymous intellectual property specialist. Mr Murgitroyd became chief executive of the firm in February.
