A TARGET to increase the number of hotel rooms in Glasgow is on course to be exceeded three years ahead of schedule.

More than 1,050 rooms were added to the city over 2017 and 2018, meaning that 42 per cent of the 2,500 targeted by 2023 has been achieved. A further 22 hotels are in the planning pipeline in the city, figures from Glasgow City Council reveal.

The council is expected to confirm the progress made against the target set in the Glasgow Tourism and Visitor Plan in 2017 when its operation performance and delivery scrutiny committee meets tomorrow.

The authority revealed that, of the 22 hotels in the pipeline, planning permission has been approved for 12, which between them will provide around 1,900 rooms. Two of these hotels are scheduled to open this year, with a further seven expected to open their doors in 2020. A further 10 hotel developments, spanning around 1,600 rooms, are at various stages in the planning process.

A spokesman said: “These figures for hotel development show how attractive Glasgow continues to be for investors in this sector, and underlines the city’s status as a major visitor destination.

“The target of an additional 2,500 hotel rooms seems set to be met and exceeded three years early, which is a statement of the confidence that the tourism and hospitality sector - a key part of Glasgow’s economy - has in its future growth here, and this investment can only be a good thing.”

Five new hotels opened in Glasgow in 2018, which between them swelled room numbers by 930. Openings included the Radisson Red located close to the SSE Hydro on Clydeside and Motel One on Oswald Street, now the biggest by room number with 374.
