A EDINBURGH-BASED businessman has teed himself up for a crack at qualification for next month’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

Richard Gill, managing partner of media agency Dentsu Aegis Network in Scotland, will take part in a final qualifying round at the Fairmont St Andrews next week after carding a 71 in the final regional qualifier at Panmure near Carnoustie.

Mr Gill, who plays off +1, is looking to go one better than his previous best attempt at qualification, when he missed out on securing a place at Royal Troon in 2016 by a single stroke. It is the sixth time Mr Gill, runner-up in the Scottish Boy’s Championship in 2001 who represented Scottish universities, has tried to qualify for The Open. The event takes place from July 18 to 21.
