C&D Auction Marts held its annual hill bred suckler calf sale together with store cattle at Longtown on Saturday.
The sale was topped at £910 twice, firstly for the 2nd prize Limousin bullock from N Calvert & Son, Greensburn, West Hall then for a pen of Beef Shorthorn bulls from J Hepburn & Co, North House, Hawick.
The pre-sale show was judged by Mr William Miller, High Aketon, Wigton who awarded the championship to a black British Blue x heifer shown by A A Roskell & Partners, Laverhay, Moffat, which later sold for £870 to the judge.
The reserve championship was awarded to Wanwood Partners, Wanwood Hill, Alston for their first prize Limousin bullock, which sold for £800.
Harrison & Hetherington sold 67 clean cattle, 57 cast cows, 1,230 prime lambs and 670 ewes at St Boswells yesterday.
The 46 prime heifers forward peaked at 260p/kg and averaged 208p (+1p), while 20 prime bullocks sold to 252p and levelled at 193p (-7p). One young bull sold to 198p (n/c).
In the rough ring 57 cast cows sold to £1,035 and 141p to average 115p (-3p).
The 1,230 prime lambs at the sale sold to £102 and 194p for Beltex to average 158p (-4p).
In the cast sheep ring the overall average for 670 head was £50.94. Heavy ewes sold to £88 for Texels and averaged £73, while light ewes peaked at £69 for Cheviots and averaged £42.
The firm also sold 20 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 236p and an average of 205p (+16p), while 16 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 227p and levelled at 198p (+14p. Forty-one prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 215p and averaged 186p (+12p), while 25 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 172p and levelled at 143p (+8p).
In the rough ring 133 cast dairy cows sold to 137p and averaged 88p (+11p), while 88 cast beef cows peaked at 172p and averaged 111p (-4p). Eight cast bulls made up to 120p and averaged 97p (-5p).
There were also 2,183 prime lambs that sold to £106 and 255p/kg to average 162p (-9p).
In the cast sheep ring 83 heavy ewes sold to £82 for Beltex and averaged £56.48 (-£4), while 125 light ewes peaked at £48.50 for Swaledales and levelled at £31.41 (-£3).
Messrs Craig Wilson sold 2085 prime lambs at Ayr yesterday to a top of £86 per head and 205.6p/kg for two separate lots of Beltex lambs to average 161p overall (+3p on the week).
There were also 704 cast sheep forward which peaked at £118 for Texel ewes.Mule ewes sold to £58 while Blackface ewes sold to £48.50 for an impressive pen of 45.
