Harrison & Hetherington sold 65 clean cattle, 70 cast cows, 1,788 prime hoggets and 309 cast sheep at St Boswells yesterday.
Forty-seven prime heifers sold to a top of 246p/kg to average 220p (+4p), while 13 prime bullocks peaked at 231p and averaged 212p (+3p).
In the rough ring cast cows sold to £1,453 and 183p to average 134p (-3p).
Prime hoggets sold to £144 for Texels and 331p for Beltex to average £100 or 230p (-12p).
In the cast sheep ring the average was £76.67 for all sheep. Heavy ewes sold to £155 for Suffolks and averaged £99, while light ewes peaked at £119 for Cheviots and averaged £71.
The firm also sold 19 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 228p/kg to average 217p (+12p), while 21 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 220p and levelled at 206p (+4p).
There were also a total of 57 young bulls at the sale yesterday which averaged 169p overall (-3p).
The 28 prime, beef-bred young bulls sold to 236p and averaged 183p (-1p), while the 29 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 178p and levelled at 156p (+12p).
In the rough ring 156 cast dairy cows sold to 155p and averaged 111p (n/c), while 94 cast beef cows peaked at 181p and averaged 141p (+3p). Five cast bulls made up to 168p and averaged 141p (+9p).
There were also 1510 prime hoggets that sold to £147 and 350p/kg to average 235p (-5p).
In the cast sheep ring 70 heavy ewes sold to £137 for a Texel and averaged £101 (+£5.50), while 28 light ewes peaked at £99 for a Hill Cheviot and levelled at £63 (n/c).
Messrs Craig Wilson sold 2.081 sheep comprising 1,608 prime hoggets and 473 cast sheep at Ayr yesterday. Top price for hoggets was £136 for a pen of Beltex and top price per kilo was 298p for a pair of Beltex. Blackface hoggets topped at £118 for one pen and 235p/kg for another. Mule hoggets sold to £110 for a pen of 39 or 232p for another pen.
The whole sale averaged 233p for a heavier show of stock. All classes of cast sheep cashed in at rates not seen for some time from start to finish. Top price of £176 was paid for a pair of Texel cross ewes, while Mule ewes sold to £116 and Blackfaces peaked at £82.
C&D Auction Marts held its fortnightly sale of store cattle in Dumfries yesterday where the entry of 305 cattle were predominantly forward stores. Beef shorthorn bullocks sold to £1,185 and to 263p/kg for Charolais, while heifers topped at £1140 and 319p also for Charolais. Limousin bulls sold to £980 and 221p.
