MESSRS Craig Wilson sold 154 prime and cast cattle at its sale at Ayr on Tuesday.

Prime cattle were still good to sell this week with 13 prime heifers selling to a top of £1,386 and 237p/kg for a Limousin to average £1,253 or 225p overall. Four prime bullocks peaked at £1,384 for a Limousin or 226p for a Charolais cross to level at £1333 or 216p.

In the rough ring trade was sharper for a plainer show. Sixty-six cast beef cows sold to £1,300 for an Aberdeen Angus or 186p for another Angus to average 129p overall, while 55 cast dairy cows peaked at £1,150 and 160p for different Friesians to level at 115p.

Four cast bulls sold to £1,460 and 133p for the same Aberdeen Angus to average 117p, while 12 clean, OTM cattle peaked at £1,270 for an Aberdeen Angus heifer or 195p for a British Blue heifer to average 170p.

Six dairy cattle sold to £1,850 for a fresh calved Holstein Friesian heifer, while fresh calved cows sold to £1,450 on two occasions.

The firm also held its first sale of unhaltered beef bred bulls at Ayr since Lockdown started. Sixteen bulls sold to a top of £3400gns for a Limousin to average £2,130 with a 76% Clearance rate.

The firm also sold 555 prime and cast sheep at Newton Stewart yesterday.

The 375 lambs sold slightly sharper on the week to average 244p/kg.

A top price of £110 was achieved on five occasions, while lightweight Beltex topped per kilo at 259p.

Hoggs were harder to cash and sold to £79 for Suffolks or to 172p for Blackfaces. Best types and hill types of cast ewes would be easier to cash on the week with the fat types still hard to shift. Top price was £90 for Texel Crosses with Mules to £70 and Blackfaces to £59.

C&D Auction Marts sold 64 cattle in Dumfries yesterday. In line with other centres prime cattle sold easily and peaked at 238p/kg for a Limousin heifer.

OTM's met a sharper trade for poorer quality. Dairy bred OTM cattle sold to £1,240 and 160p to level at 114p, while beef types peaked at £1,103 and 159p to average 134p.

Trade remained good for the 359 prime lambs at the sale. Top price was £112 for a heavyweight Texel and 269p/kg for lighter Texels. The 247 prime hoggs were an end of season offering that peaked at £88 for Texels and for Cheviots.

Cast ewes were harder to cash if they were on the fat side but lean ewes were sharper. Top price was £119 for Texels, while Cheviot mules made up to £77 and Blackfaces to £64.
