THE Berwickshire town of Eyemouth has received a significant jobs boost after plans to construct a maintenance facility for a major offshore wind farm were given the green light.
Scottish Borders Council (SBC) has approved a joint submission by Neart na Gaoithe Offshore Wind Limited and Eyemouth Harbour Trust for a three- storey, 1,040 square metre main building, and a two storey, 538 square metre storage warehouse in the town.
The consent has been hailed for taking Eyemouth Harbour a step closer to its goal of becoming the operations and maintenance base for Neart na Gaoithe, a £2 billion windfarm under construction around 15km off the Fife coast.
The wind farm will have the capacity to produce around 450 megawatts of low-carbon electricity, enough to power 375,000 homes, when complete.
With the new building earmarked to house the office, warehousing and staff welfare facilities for the project when it is operational, it is hoped the investment will create up to 50 permanent jobs in Eyemouth over its 25-year lifespan. It is also anticipated that the town could benefit from a range of training, retraining and apprenticeship opportunities.
Christine Bell, business manager at Eyemouth Harbour Trust, said: “Today’s decision by SBC is warmly welcomed by Eyemouth Harbour Trust.
“We have been working closely with the NnG project team to achieve this goal. It is another positive and significant step towards regeneration opportunities being realised in Eyemouth.”
