Messrs Craig Wilson sold 1,284 prime lambs at Newton Stewart yesterday to average 208p/kg.
This week’s entry was a mixed show for quality with some lambs lacking flesh which were hard to sell. The sale was topped at £107 for heavyweight Suffolks and at 227p/kg for Dutch Texels. In the cast sheep ring the best continental types and Blackface ewes were a similar trade to last week whereas over fat and over lean types were making less money. Top prices were for Texel cross ewes at £116 with Mules to £75 and Blackface ewes making up to £64 for a pen of 16.
Caledonian Marts Ltd sold 3548 store lambs & feeding ewes at their weekly sale at Stirling yesterday.
Top price of the day was £87 for a pen of Beltex lambs in a run of 146 lambs from one consigner that averaged £83.
There was a great show of Blackface Lambs forward again this week with 1844 averaging £51.47 and selling to a top of £65 for a pen of 50.
C & D Auctions Ltd held their weekly sale of primestock in Dumfries yesterday.
Prime cattle sold well and peaked at 242p/kg for a Limousin Heifer. However, OTMs met a steadier trade with very few well fleshed cows in the market. Limousins sold to £1186 and to 167p/kg.
There were also 1322 prime lambs at the sale which peaked at £101 for heavy Texels and 246p for mid-weight lambs.
The 622 cast sheep easily maintained recent rates with heavy ewes peaking at £102 for a Suffolk. Cheviot Mules sold to £87, while Cheviots made up to £79 and Blackfaces to £72.
Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 208 prime and cast cattle at their weekly sale at Ayr on Tuesday. Prime cattle continue to sell well with a top price of 271p/kg or £1544 for a Limousin bullock which was bought by Messrs W Frasers, butchers in Stranraer. Heifers peaked at 251p for a Limousin and at £1397 for another Limousin. There were 17 heifers at the sale which averaged 225p or £1232, while four bullocks averaged 224p or £1291. Two young bulls averaged 206p or £1177.
There were 182 cattle sold in the rough ring where lean feeding cows were hard to cash this week. Eight bulls sold to £1380 for a Simmental or 147p for a Limousin. Cast beef cows peaked at £1350 for a Limousin cross and to 172p for an Aberdeen Angus. Cast dairy cattle sold to £1000, while clean cattle sold to £1120 and 179p for a Hereford. There were also 8 dairy cattle which sold to £1750 for a fresh calved heifer and to £1700 for a fresh calved cow.
