Dunoon Grammar will represent Scotland and the UK at the ‘world’s biggest education conference’ which takes place online this week, to showcase Scotland’s pioneering approach to enterprise learning.
The school is participating in World Education Week (5-9 October) which is bringing together 100 schools from all seven continents of the globe as part of a drive to accelerate progress towards the UN’s Sustainability Development Goal for quality education for all.
For its part, Dunoon will present a ‘high-paced’ online seminar today (Tuesday) on the subject of enterprise education, following its success last year when it was named as the first UK winner of The European Entrepreneurial Schools Award.
Delivered by pupils, parents and school partners, the seminar is entitled The Greatest Show(case): immersive & creative learning for entrepreneurship. It opens with a distinctly Scottish flavoured adaptation of The Greatest Showman, involving pipers, drums and dancers and draws on the school’s experiences to illustrate its innovative approach to learning to build confidence and skills.
Supported by the government-backed Scotland’s Enterprising Schools (SES) initiative delivered by Young Enterprise Scotland, Dunoon has embedded enterprise learning throughout its curriculum with the clear commitment of its teachers. Its role in World Education Week is another endorsement of the success of the SES /Young Enterprise Scotland partnership to support the planning and implementation of entrepreneurial skills through the school’s creative enterprise journey.
Scotland is the first to offer the equivalent of a ‘higher’ for entrepreneurial skills.
Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills, John Swinney MSP, offered his congratulations to the school. He said:
"We must do all we can to allow our young people a chance to thrive and be the best they can be. That is why we support Young Enterprise Scotland and have invested £200,000 for 2020/21 in the Scotland's Enterprising Schools platform which is one way to nurture the entrepreneurial potential of all of our young people.
“I am delighted that Dunoon Grammar will represent Scotland on the world stage when pupils make a global presentation online during World Education Week. I will follow their progress with interest and send them my good wishes.”
Julie Degnan, Project Manager for Scotland’s Enterprising Schools, added: “Dunoon has embraced enterprise learning and I am delighted that their commitment to including entrepreneurial skills within the curriculum has been rewarded by the opportunity to represent Scotland during World Education Week. They are a tremendous example of what can be achieved.”
David Mitchell, Head Teacher at Dunoon Grammar said: "We are delighted to have been chosen to take part in World Education Week, just one of 100 schools from across the globe invited to take part in this showcase of best practice. It is a huge honour for us to represent not just Argyll and Bute, but the whole of Scotland, and we have been working hard to prepare for it.
