GERMAN transport group Hillebrand has acquired Renfrew-based Braid, a key player in bulk liquids logistics, as it seeks to strengthen its position as a leading global logistics service provider in the alcoholic beverages sector and other non-hazardous bulk liquids commodities.

Hillebrand, based in Mainz, described the acquisition of €200 million-turnover Braid, founded in the UK over 60 years ago and now operating in 19 countries, as an “exciting opportunity to strengthen its network of services, products, skills, knowledge and teams”. Braid’s chief executive Allan Leddra and his management team will join Hillebrand to continue to grow the consolidated bulk liquids business of both firms.

Cees van Gent, chief executive of Hillebrand, said both companies have remained resilient during the Covid-19 pandemic. Hillebrand and Braid, he added, will continue to run their operations separately for the time being with the businesses coming together within the next 12 months.

Mr Leddra said Hillebrand’s acquisition of Braid “provides a major growth opportunity for both businesses”.

Hillebrand generates revenues of €1.2 billion and employs of 2,300 people in 90 countries.
