A pupil has been left injured in hospital after being knocked down outside of a school in Ayrshire.

Police say an 11-year-old girl was hit by a van near to Ardrossan Academy in the Sorbie Road area of the North Ayrshire town at around 8.45am.

The road, which runs past the school, was closed while emergency services dealt with the incident, as our sister title The Ardrossan Herald reports.

Police said the girl was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital campus in Glasgow.

A police spokesman said: “Around 8.45am on Monday, 1 November, officers were called to the Sorbie Road area of Ardrossan, following a report of a crash involving a van and an 11-year-old girl pedestrian.

“Emergency services remain at the scene and the road is currently closed.”
