MESSRS Craig Wilson Ltd had 1,182 prime hoggs forward at Ayr yesterday when heavy types were scarce and easy to cash. Top prices on the day were £105 per head and 218.6p per kg with the overall average levelling at 189.8p (+20.7p on the week and +24.3p on the corresponding sale last year).
There was also a good show of 602 cast sheep when all classes of ewes were at least £4 dearer than last week with heavy ewes selling to £151.50 for a Pen of Texels and averaging £71.84, while light/export-type ewes peaked at £55 for Blackfaces and levelled at £42.76.
Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold 45 prime heifers in St Boswells yesterday to a top of 245p per kg and an average of 220p (+4p), while 26 prime bullocks peaked at 244p and levelled at 223p (no change).
In the rough ring 76 beef cows sold to 197p and averaged 140p (-2p).
There were also 1,717 prime hoggs that sold to £106 and 210.5p to average 185.2p (+1.7p).
The 710 cast sheep forward saw heavy ewes sell to £117 for Charollais and average £79, while light ewes peaked at £77 for Cheviots and levelled at £36.
The firm also sold 23 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 241.5p and an average of 180.9p (-30.1p), while 24 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 234.5p and levelled at 203.4p (+1.1p). Four prime, dairy-bred bullocks sold to 167.5p and averaged 163p (+9p). Forty-seven prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 234.5p and averaged 196.4p (-4p), while 47 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 191.5p and levelled at 155.2p (-3.2p).
In the rough ring 144 beef cows sold to 214.5p and averaged 138.6p (+5.6p), while a big show of 282 dairy cows peaked at 149.5p and levelled at 98.3p (-1.9p). Eleven bulls sold to 180.5p and averaged 118.7p (-8.6p).
There were also 2,081 prime hoggs that sold to £108.80 and 281.1p to average 187.1p (-0.1p).
A nice show of 162 heavy cast ewes sold to £107.50 for Texels and averaged £71.53, while 57 light ewes peaked at £54.50 for North Country Cheviots and levelled at £31.18.
Lawrie & Symington Ltd sold 17 prime heifers in Lanark yesterday to a top of 252p and an average of 241.9p (-1.6p), while four prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 232p and levelled at 216.3p (-4p). Seven prime, B&W bullocks sold to 159.5p and averaged 147.6p (-3.1p).
In the rough ring 80 beef cows averaged 130p (+3p) and 22 dairy cows levelled at 101p (+2p). Three bulls averaged 112p.
The firm also sold 1634 prime hoggs to a top of £100.50 and 234.5p to average 183.4p (+0.5p).
The 204 heavy cast ewes forward sold to £114.50 for a Texel and averaged £63.50, while 470 light ewes peaked at £64.50 for Cheviots and levelled at £44.35.
