MUTUAL Scottish Friendly has appointed financial sector veteran Anja Balfour and Gillian Watson, senior managing director at Scottish investment bank Noble & Co, as non-executive directors, writes Ian McConnell.

The Glasgow-based life and investment organisation said Ms Balfour had more than three decades of investment industry experience, working in executive and non-executive roles with F&C Global, Schroders, Axa Framlington and Baillie Gifford.

It added that Ms Watson, who is also a non-executive director of Martin Currie Global Portfolio Trust, had more than 30 years of strategic, finance and business development experience within various sectors.

Scottish Friendly declared the two new non-executive directors would play an important role in helping maintain its growth. It announced record sales of £44.8 million in 2017, up 32 per cent from £33.9m in the prior year on the standard industry measure.

Scottish Friendly chief executive Jim Galbraith said: “We are delighted to welcome Anja Balfour and Gillian Watson as non-executive directors. The experience they bring comes at a key period in Scottish Friendly’s history as the group aims to continue its sustained period of success in growing its business through organic growth, mergers and acquisitions.”
