The weather has led to a failure of several traffic lights in Glasgow and drivers are advised to take extra care.

The council’s traffic control and management issued the warning late this afternoon to motorists.

A TraffCom statement said: “Due to power spikes caused by the current bad weather a number of traffic signals have failed and are currently off.

“These will be attended as soon as possible and switched back on once the weather allows.

“There are at least 30 sites currently off around the city and road users are advised to exercise caution when approaching dark traffic signals."

Similar problems are being experienced across the UK.

Major power failures have been reported across large areas of the UK disrupting train services, airports and traffic lights.

UK Power Networks said large parts of London and the South East are without electricity.

A spokesman said "We believe this is due to a failure on National Grid's network, which is affecting our customers."
