A new Scottish clothing label inspired by Glasgow's rain is launching with a pop-up shop in Princes Square this weekend.

Protected Species is a Glasgow born design collective, with the aim of creating raincoats that look more stylish than the average hill walking gear. The company came up with an innovative waterproof fabric and a range of trenchcoats and parkas, with hoods, pockets, toggles and other practical features to protect against wind and rain.

While Protective Species products are created from a workroom in Perth, Anne Muir, the founder, credits living in Glasgow as the inspiration behind the brand.

"Glasgow has such a strong sense of style and I was always frustrated that I couldn't find the right jacket for the weather" she said. "I didn't want to look like I was going to climb a Munro when commuting into town".

Anne and her team have spent almost two years working on fabric prototypes, and using her knowledge from a love of snowboarding, running and hill walking, designed an item that protects against wind and rain.

"Our Fluid Intelligence fabric is very different from other waterproofs - it's soft, noiseless, lightweight, tactile and incredibly stretchy. People say you hardly notice it, it's almost like a second skin" she added. "Yet it's incredibly technical, waterproof and breathable".

They will be joined at the pop-up shop by Scaramanga, a satchel brand from Fife with their new Urban collection, inspired by classic brown leather travel bags from the 20th century.

There will also be special offers and treats over the weekend for those who visit, including 20% off all jackets, coffee and cake on the Saturday, and on Sunday Laura Russell, Edinburgh stylist and Satisfashion blogger is doing drop in sessions on how to dress for your body shape.

Claire Wilkinson, Marketing Manager of Princes Square says: "We love to be able to support home-grown brands with pop up space and Protected Species fits really well with our customers - sophisticated, stylish and contemporary."

The pop-up shop will be in Princes Square during the weekend of the 25th-27th April.
