Rothay Manor, Ambleside in the Lake District is a Traditional Grade II listed Country Hotel, near Lake Windermere. Nestled just a minute’s short walk from the centre of the historic village of Ambleside, the award-winning Rothay Manor is both an explorer and gourmet lovers delight.
This stunning country Manor offers the very finest in accommodation and cuisine, offering a homely retreat set within pristine and well-tended gardens. The majority of rooms (all recently refurbished) have balconies overlooking the private gardens.
STYLE AND SUBSTANCE
It is immediately apparent on entering Rothay Manor that no expense has been spared in the presentation of the building or the luxury experience. If you are looking for a stay with class, elegancy and sophistication, look no further.
SLEEPING MATTERS
Our room was extremely well appointed, with stunning views over the hills beyond. Set well off the main road within their own grounds, there is little traffic noise to interrupt your nights sleep and the Double King size bed was befitting of the venue. The beds are handmade in Yorkshire by Harrison Spinks.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Rothay Manor prides itself on fine dining, and if that’s your thing – you will not be disappointed. The minimalist but quality menu would not be out of place in London’s finest culinary quarters, so be prepared to be spoiled for quality, if not choice. During our stay, starters comprised of Liver & Onions, Beef Tartare, Pigeon, Scallop Ceviche and Sole Veronique.
Mains included Herdwick Lamb, Duck. Beef Lion, Wild Stonebass or Tuna.
For the less adventurous, a less publicised menu is available offering traditional favourites such as steak and chips
DRINK IN THE SIGHTS
There are many short and long walks to enjoy throughout Ambleside and beyond, and so for those fond of the outdoors, those walking boots are essential if you wish to venture beyond the small quaint village of Ambleside itself.
Additionally, neighbouring Lake Windermere is a short but well worthy drive away and a must see before leaving the area. Ambleside and it’s larger neighbour Windermere can certainly boast some of the most stunning scenery in Great Britain, and surely an equal to the hills and glens of Scotland the Welsh Valleys.
NICE TOUCH
There were actually a number of small nice touches that made this stay extra special. The Manor receptionist was very helpful, to the point of locating a local map for us and giving advice to visit Tarn Hows, a small lake North of Coniston.
Very comfy, fluffy white branded gowns were also provided, branded wooden coat hangers in the wardrobes, and most welcome of all – chilled water in a flask style stainless steel water jug dispenser (which seems to be a rare feature in even the best Hotels these days).

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
