Formerly Hotel Missoni and then G&V, the 136-room property rebranded to Radisson Collection in 2018 and is a modern luxury boutique hotel.

It is the only five-star hotel along the Royal Mile and strikes just the right balance between hipster and chic.

The first-floor outdoor terrace is a hidden gem for a gin & tonic on a hot day.

Floor-to-ceiling windows give the guest rooms a bright, airy feel and are perfect for pulling up one of the rooms spacious armchairs, pouring a wine and watching the capital's throngs go by.

Upper floors offer 'skyline' rooms with panoramic views over the city.

There is a stylish bathroom, generously stocked mini-bar, a flat-screen tv embedded into the wall, and mattresses are on the firm but comfortable side.

We had dinner at the superb, Dine, within walking distance of the hotel, where a three-course pre-theatre menu costs £21.50.

Breakfast at the hotel includes a delicious continental buffet of pastries, cheese, meat, fruit, cereals, muesli and yoghurt. A traditional and vegetarian cooked breakfast can also be made to order at no extra cost, as can dishes such as waffles and eggs Benedict.

The hotel also boasts Cucina, an award-winning Italian restaurant.

The hotel's Epicurean bar has an extensive cocktail list, although its neon-lit vibe gives it more of a pre-going out feel than place for a quiet nightcap. Great amaretto sours though.

Complimentary tea and coffee is available in the lobby where guests can also help themselves to shortbread, boiled sweets and squares of tablet - a novelty in an era when so many penny-pinching hotels seem to be scrapping the complimentary hotel room biscuits.

There are also mini jars of honey available at breakfast harvested from the hotel's own rooftop bee hives, and the surprisingly reasonably-priced spa is well worth a visit.

Perfectly located in the very heart of Edinburgh's historic district, its main entrance on George IV Bridge is a stone's throw from the Royal Mile and a short walk from Princes Street Park, Edinburgh Castle and Waverley station.

Bed and Breakfast at the Radisson Collection Edinburgh starts from £160.00 per night, based on double occupancy
