STYLE AND SUBSTANCE

Overlooking the River Clyde and boasting an 18-hole golf course among its 240-acre woodland estate, Mar Hall offers a tranquil getaway just a short drive from Glasgow.

Its grand interiors and grounds have made it a highly popular wedding venue, as well as a destination for spa breaks or afternoon tea.

The Edwardian mansion dates back to 1828, when it was commissioned by Lord Blantyre. Oak for the interiors was imported from Quebec in Canada, and the grand fireplaces and chandeliers still is use throughout the hotel pay homage to its origins as a baronial pad.

In 1916 it was renovated and converted into a hospital for sailors and soldiers who had lost limbs in the First World War.

In 2004, it re-opened as a five-star hotel with a spa, swimming pool, gym, bar, and restaurant.

SLEEPING MATTERS

The rooms are spacious, comfortable and unpretentious, with complementary robes, flat screen television and armchairs.

Our room - number one - was tucked away in a tower on the top floor with terrific views across the river.

A large fireplace gave it a sense of grandeur, while the sprawling bathroom - with bath, walk-in shower, and his-and-hers washbasins - hit the luxury buttons.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

HeraldScotland:

Guests can enjoy afternoon tea in the plush surroundings of the grand hall, with its chandeliers and garden views.

Lunchtime meals including chilli nachos and salmon Caesar salad are served in the Spike bar.

The sandwiches - on soft, thick bread - were a real treat.

Expect Masterchef-style food at dinner in the main restaurant. The fish was outstanding.

Vegan and vegetarian menus also available.

DRINK IN THE SIGHTS

HeraldScotland:

Check out the champagne fridge if you're in the mood to splurge.

The house Chardonnay - a white Burgundy - is divine, and the barman knows how to mix a great Amaretto sour.

NICE TOUCH

HeraldScotland:

The fridge filled with free water bottles in the leisure area was great to keep cool and hydrated during a strenuous lounge by the pool.

And throughout the hotel, staff provide warm and friendly customer service that really sets the tone.
