Sustainability remains a key priority for the Scottish and UK Governments and in a bid to encourage households to do their bit to reach net zero, the new government has floated the idea of a “rooftop revolution” which could make it easier to install solar panels on properties.

Currently there are restrictions on where and how high up solar panels can be placed, as well as restrictions in conservation areas and on listed buildings.

While this is welcome news, Scottish energy efficiency specialists Green Home Systems is urging homeowners to take action now.

Gordon McDill, private sales director, said: “It’s fantastic to hear there might be changes to current restrictions to make it easier for even more households to capitalise on green technology but with little detail on what this policy may look like and if it will extend into Scotland, we’d urge anyone who is looking to reduce their carbon footprint and potentially save money on electricity bills to reach out for expert advice now.

“Solar energy can have a huge impact on household electricity bills. Not only can it help households reduce their carbon footprint, it can also be a smart financial move.

“We’re seeing more and more new build homes being fitted with solar panels as standard and it’s important that people know about the benefits that this technology can bring for any home. We’re only going to see more and more uptake of solar panels as homeowners seek to future-proof their homes while reducing their bills and environmental impact.

“People typically start to think about installing solar panels between March and May as the weather begins to improve, with the fairer weather reminding them they can harness the sun’s UV rays. These are typically our busiest months for installations.

“It is also common for homeowners to first consult us on insulation to ensure they are not unnecessarily losing heat from their homes. Adding solar panels is often the next natural step they continue their journey towards saving on electricity bills and reducing their carbon footprint.

“While our Scottish weather makes it tricky to harness as much energy during the colder months, it’s actually a great time to start researching and planning your installation so that by spring, you are ahead of the curve and are in a position to generate more energy.”

Solar panels are not a ‘one size fits all’ solution. It is important that they are bespoke to each home. Installers must factor in your home’s age, number of stories, and house type (ie. detached, semi-detached or terraced). These factors should all be taken into consideration as they will influence the installation recommendations.

It is estimated that if your home has solar panels, you could save up to 70 per cent on your electricity bills. While initial investment is required for installation, typically between five and seven years later, homeowners have saved the equivalent cost in electricity bills.

Gordon added: “You can even sell the energy you generate back to the grid, making solar panels a money saving and earning investment.

“Another key benefit of solar panels that people often don’t realise is that it tends to add value to your home report.”
