What’s the story? When Camping Goes Horribly Wrong.

Midges? You guessed it. And a whole lot worse …

Worse than midges? You have clearly never visited Torridon or Glen Coe in July…

Oh, I have. And to this day still bear the patchwork of polka dot scars. A badge of honour and rite of passage.

And the TV show? Sorry, I digress. This 90-minute Channel 5 special shines a spotlight on the less-salubrious side of the great outdoors and the myriad calamities that can befall unwitting campers.

Among its contributors are presenter and eco-warrior Naomi Wilkinson, author and columnist Julie Peasgood, travel expert Simon Calder and broadcaster James Whale.

What can we expect? There’s a walk on the wild side in South Africa when a safari brings a not-for-the-fainthearted close encounter with a lion; a family swears off camping for life after enduring a wet weekend in Wales; and a visit to Fraser Island in Queensland, Australia, ends badly when someone is bitten.

Yikes. Anything else? In another segment, campers are left feeling sheepish when their swish “glamping” tent gets overrun by wayward farm animals. And a relaxing fishing trip takes a perilous turn when a snowmobile drags accommodation and belongings alike across a frozen lake at high speed.

When can I watch? When Camping Goes Horribly Wrong, Channel 5, tomorrow, 6.30pm.
