Why would I need a hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy – an operation to remove the womb or uterus – is usually a last resort to treat serious health concerns.

These may be painful, heavy periods that are a result of fibroids, pelvic pain, a prolapse, or cancer.

Some of these things can be improved with other treatments: symptoms of a uterine prolapse may be improved by doing pelvic floor exercises; heavy periods can be treated with medication, a hormonal coil, or by removing only the lining of the womb; and medication, or minor surgery, can treat fibroids.

How long does it take?

If there is no alternative to a hysterectomy there are still some options open to doctors. It may be, for example, that your symptoms can be treated with a vaginal hysterectomy, which is less invasive than an abdominal hysterectomy. Both operations are performed under a general anaesthetic. A vaginal hysterectomy takes about 45 minutes, an abdominal hysterectomy takes about an hour and involves a cut at the “bikini line”. You will usually be able to go home after four to six days.

What is recovery like?

For the first two weeks at home you should rest and continue to do physiotherapy exercises.

You can usually go back to work after six to 12 weeks and after three months you should be feeling more or less back to normal.
