ARBUTHNOTT - Professor Sir John Peebles (Glasgow 1939). Passed away recently in Nottingham. Beloved husband of Lady Elinor and loving father of Anne, Andrew and Alison (Ali), beloved grandfather to his nine grandchildren. Loved by daughter-in-law and sons in-law and extended family. Former graduate of and Senior Lecturer in Bacteriology at The University of Glasgow, Professor of Microbiology at Trinity College Dublin. Subsequently Vice-Chancellor of the University of Strathclyde (1991-2000) and made Knight Bachelor for services to education in 1998. Chairman NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Board (2002-07) and President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2011-14). Sir John, who will be greatly missed, was a highly accomplished academic and leaves a rich legacy to education and to public life. Funeral enquiries care of A W Lymn, Bingham, 01949837211
