February 18.Well done, the Right Rev. Professor James Whyte. His

verbal assessment at Kirkcaldy Rotary of Mrs Thatcher in particular and

the Conservative Party in general articulated the feelings of many Scots

-- church connected and otherwise (February 18).

Conversely Professor Whyte is alluded to as being ''demonic and

Satanic'' by that extrovert pillar of the Scottish Tory Party, Sir

Nicholas Fairbairn (a real pot and kettle analogy).

Some may say Professor Whyte's remarks will distance the Church from

its members. I think not. I consider the simple analysis of Mrs

Thatcher's philosophy, namely the importance of the individual (as

opposed to the community) vis-a-vis the attainment of wealth, highlights

the uncaring attitude of this Government.

The criticism made was of the domineering, ever righteous manner of

Margaret Thatcher and servile, muted attitude of her Cabinet, and not of

the ever dwindling Scottish Conservative voters. Like the rest of us,

they deserve better.
