NEWCASTLE'S Jane Martin pulled off an astonishing victory over third seed Liz Irving in the Leekes British Open quarter-finals in Cardiff yesterday.

The former British junior champion, seeded No.10, won 9-2, 6-9, 5-9, 9-7, 9-2 to book a semi against holder Michelle Martin, who removed Wakefield's British national champion, Suzanne Horner, 9-6, 9-1, 9-3. Horner, seeded No.6, recently had beaten her for the first time. ``It was nice to get quick revenge,'' the Australian said. ``I have put Mrs Horner back in her corner.''

Norfolk's fourth seed Cassie Jackman lost to Gloucester's eighth-seeded Fiona Geaves, 4-9, 9-3, 6-9, 9-6, 9-4.

Men's second seed Rodney Eyles won an all-Australian battle with Anthony Hill 15-10, 15-9, 15-7. England's Mark Chaloner lost 15-6, 13-15, 15-8, 15-9 to Australia's third-seeded Brett Martin, and world No.27 Paul Johnson's giant-killing run ended when he lost 14-15, 15-9, 15-11, 15-9 to Frenchman Julien Bonetat.

COLIN Hamilton and his sister Laura, the Scottish junior champions, and Edinburgh Sports Club's Lisa McKenna are all seeded in today's European Junior Championships in Dusseldorf. Alan Tasker (Kirkcaldy) and Chris Small are also playing in an event which starts with an individual championship, followed by a team event.


WORLD No.13 Arnaud Boetsch avoided a shock defeat against Germany's Davis Cup giant-killer Hendrik Dreekmann to give France a 2-0 lead in their World Group quarter-final in Limoges. He fought back to beat world No.81 Dreekmann 4-6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3.

Earlier, Cedric Pioline had given France a winning start against a German team deprived of Boris Becker and Michael Stich through illness and injury by beating David Prinosil 6-0, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3.

VETERAN opener Desmond Haynes, who has been in dispute with the West Indies authorities, has quit international cricket. Haynes, 40, faxed his retirement letter from Sussex, where he is starting a three-year coaching job.Haynes scored 7487 runs, including 18 centuries, at an average of 42.30 in 116 Tests. He holds the record for the most runs (8649) and most centuries (17) in 239 one-day internationals.


SWEDE Rickard Rydell and the Volvo team yesterday threw down the gauntlet to their rivals in the Auto Trader RAC Touring Car Championship by posting quickest time at Donington Park in final testing for Monday's opening rounds of the 1996 championship.
