ACTRESS Patsy Kensit and Simple Minds star Jim Kerr are to separate after four years of marriage, it was revealed yesterday.

No reason was given for the split, which was disclosed in a terse announcement by the rock singer's publicist Clive Banks Limited.

However, Patsy, 27, and Glasgow-born Jim, 35, who have a three-year-old son James, apparently have no plans to divorce.

Ms Kensit has been the subject of media speculation recently after she was spotted ``flirting'' with other celebrities.

She was photo-graphed at the MTV awards in Paris, with her hand down the trousers of INXS star Michael Hutchence, boyfriend of Paula Yates.

She was also snapped as she chatted with Manchester United footballer Ryan Giggs for three hours, later admitting she was ``starstruck''.

However, during an interview in December, she described her husband as ``incredibly generous, emotionally, and materially''. ``He would think nothing of getting on Concorde to visit me wherever I was,'' she said.

The statement from Clive Banks Limited read: ``Regrettably, Jim Kerr and Patsy Kensit have decided to separate. They have no plans whatsoever to divorce and will remain friends and devoted parents to their son James.''

Ms Kensit's publicist JAA confirmed it was a joint statement on behalf of both partners.

The actress stars in the forthcoming Angels and Insects, a feature film which she hopes will establish her as a credible performer.

Glasgow-born Kerr leads and sings with Simple Minds, one of the world's top bands.

The couple were mobbed by fans and cameramen at their Chelsea register office wedding in January 1992. It was the second celebrity marriage for both partners.

Jim was married to Pretenders' lead singer Chrissie Hynde, with whom he had a daughter Yasmin, now 10.

Patsy married Dan Donovan of Big Audio Dynamite when she was 20 and they separated two years later, blaming pressure of work.
