AFTER John Higgins' quickfire 9-1 win over Alain Robidoux on Tuesday, fellow Scots Chris Small and Stephen Hendry also raced into the third round of the Royal Liver Assurance UK Championship at Preston yesterday.

Small, the world No.62 from Edinburgh, beat Basingstoke's Mark Flowerdew 9-2. ``The money will come in handy, because my girlfriend is expecting a baby next month,'' said the Scot, who reached the semi-finals of last season's Regal Welsh Open. He next meets the 1993 UK winner, Ronnie O'Sullivan, for a quarter-final place.

Hendry, 6-2 up, completed a 9-3 win last night over Anthony Hamilton, the world No.31.

Nigel Bond reeled off five frames in a row to beat Tony Knowles 9-4. Dennis Taylor, now 46, produced a vintage comeback from 8-5 down to win 9-8 against world No.8, Welshman Darren Morgan.

Steve Lee, conqueror of Steve Davis, beat Neal Foulds 9-7 but 17-year-old Paul Hunter could not follow up his upset win over Alan McManus. He led 5-3 but won only one more frame in losing 9-6 to Welshman Wayne Jones. Results:

SCOT Alan Burnett's hopes of adding the Embassy IBSF World Amateur Championship to his world under-21 title ended yesterday when he lost 5-4 in the quarter-finals to Thailand's Rom Surin in Bristol.

The Ayrshire teenager trailed 3-1, but took the next three frames to lead 4-3. However, the Thai knocked in a 41 break to square the match, then booked his semi-final place by potting brown, blue, and pink in the decider.

European champion David Lilley beat Tholmas Ang of Singapore 5-0 and will play Surin in the semi-finals.
