Nine Shetland fish farm workers are waiting for confirmation from Camelot that they will share a #400,000 lottery prize.

However, it was business as usual at Wadbister Salmon's fish cages a few miles north of Lerwick yesterday as the winners turned up for work before dawn. All have requested anonymity, particularly a tenth man who pulled out of the syndicate one week before the numbers came up.

Rally driver killed

A BORDERS rally driver was recovering in hospital yesterday following a crash during the Cheviot Rally in North-umberland in which her co-driver was killed. Lydia Calder, 40, of Ettrick Bridge, near Selkirk, was taken to Hexham General Hospital then transferred to Newcastle General. Richard Patterson, 22, who was from the Edinburgh area, was airlifted by helicopter to hospital in Newcastle but died later following the crash on MoD land at Elsdon near Rothbury.

Pilot in court

A MICROLIGHT pilot appeared in private at Stirling Sheriff Court yesterday charged with flying a Skyhook Cutlass plane in a public place on June 16, 1996, and crash-landing adjacent to houses at Spey Court, Stirling, placing the householders in danger. Mr James McDonald, 39, made no plea or declaration and was released on bail.

Rape charge

A 43-YEAR-OLD man appeared at Wick Sheriff Court yesterday charged with the rape of a six-year-old girl. The offence is alleged to have occurred on Saturday in public toilets at Castletown. Fiscal Alasdair MacDonald said the man made no plea and was remanded in custody for further inquiries.

Driver banned

A MOTORIST who risked driving the short distance be-tween a pub and his home was caught by police after only 500 yards. William Farquhar, 61, of Ben Acharin View, Cannich, was fined #125 and banned for one year at Inverness Sheriff Court yesterday.

Witnesses plea

DETECTIVES are seeking witnesses to an attack on a 29-year-old woman on Dean Bridge, Edinburgh, at the weekend. They are anxious to hear from occupants of a car, possibly a Ford Escort, who may have shouted a warning before she was attacked about 12.30am by a man, said to be round faced and stockily built, wearing light trousers and a dark blouson jacket, who made off towards nearby Clarendon Crescent. Blacklist grows

LICENSEES in the Berwick district are continuing to take a tough line with troublesome customers in pubs and hotels and a special blacklist circulated around members of the local Licence Victuallers Association now contains a total of 20 names of people banned from licensed premises in the area for up to five years.

Car park plan

A #30,000 scheme is to be carried out to improve car parking arrangements at the approach to the Holy Island causeway from the mainland following a study which highlighted the inadequacies of the existing arrangements and the lack of information about the tides.
