THREE forwards from the Scottish Schools' recent tour to South Africa, Alisdair Lawson, Telfer Boyd, and Grant Howieson are in Glasgow's squad for the opening match of the under-19 district championship against the Scottish Borders at Hughenden this evening (kick-off 7pm). Squad:
P McKinlay, D Ritson, N Craig, P Reid, S Kidd, A Gibbon, S McAllister, N McLeod, C Reid, A Lawson, N Mitchell, J Toner, T Boyd, S Bryce, A Campbell, C Tulloch, G Howieson, C Smith, M Loakman, M Dick, A Lamont, A Lees, L Haycock, A Smith.
q.SALE'S New Zealand coach, John Mitchell, lines-up for the Barbarians in their annual fixture against Newport at Rodney Parade today. Team:
C Cormack (Pontypridd); D Tiueti (Bristol), F Waters (Bristol), T Whitford (Richmond), M Hutton (Richmond); N Jenkins (Pontypridd), R Moon (Llanelli); R Hardwick (Coventry), N McCarthy (Bath), J Probyn (Bedford), V Cooper (Llanelli), D Grewcock (Coventry), P Walton (Newcastle), J Mitchell (Sale), D Eves (Coventry).
q.AUSTRALIA will not be playing a Test match against England on their tour of Britain and Ireland starting later this month. Australian officials had fought hard to add a Twickenham Test in order to give them a chance of emulating their 1984 grand slam against the four home nations.
The Wallabies proposed scrapping the tour finale against the Barbarians on December 7, suggesting either November 2 or 16 to visit Twickenham. However, all suggestions were rejected.
q.SCOTTISH referee Ray Megson will be in charge of the Heineken Cup ``rematch'' between Toulouse and Cardiff on October 19. Toulouse defeated Cardiff in the final of the tournament last season and now the finalists meet again in a Pool D match.
Another Scot, Jim Fleming, will also have a key match the same day - Welsh Cup holders Pontypridd against Bath, with Welshman Gareth Simmonds the referee this Saturday when Bath take on Edinburgh.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
