FORMER Scotland stand-off Craig Chalmers last night ruled out any possibility of a return to Glasgow Caledonian Reds.

The nation's most-capped stand-off - currently on loan to Harlequins - insisted that his future in the game lies ''in England or elsewhere''.

Chalmers spoke out after being named as captain of the Border League Select to face the Barbarians in the competition's centenary match at the Greenyards a week on Monday.

He said: ''I don't know exactly where I will be playing next season, but the one thing I am sure of is that it won't be with Caley. There is no prospect of that whatsoever.

''I am enjoying my time with Harlequins and there are several options available to me.

''I will weigh them all up carefully before taking any decisions.''

Chalmers was snapped up by Quins on an eight-week loan deal from the Reds before Christmas, then successfully requested to stay at the Stoop until the end of the season.

He said: ''While it has been frustrating not to get a regular start, I love the set-up down there and I am being used in the later stages of matches.''

Chalmers couldn't hide his delight at being appointed captain of the Select side. He said: ''It is a tremendous honour and it will be great to be playing on my home turf in such a big game.''

His line-up includes current Scotland squad members Chris Paterson, Cammy Murray, Steve Scott, and Iain Fullarton, along with former Test men Craig Joiner, Iain Fairley, Adam Roxburgh and Carl Hogg, now with Leeds Tykes.

Chalmers added: ''It is a team which features the best of young talent, combined with a group of wise old heads. I don't know yet who will be in the Barbarians side, but they are sure to bring a squad full of entertaining players - so it has the makings of a memorable occasion.''

Meanwhile, the glamour end-of-season friendly between Scotland and the Barbarians will be turned into an official tribute to Gordon Brown, it was revealed last night.

Profits from the encounter at the stadium on May 24 - part of the Baa Baas' Scottish Amicable Tour - will be donated to charity. One of the main beneficiaries will be the newly-launched Gordon Brown Memorial Endowment Fund.

The SRU will discuss the other target charities with the Brown family, who have given their full support to the venture.

Scotland coach Ian McGeechan said: ''I can think of no more fitting tribute to Gordon, a man whose character and physical presence was an inspiration on international rugby grounds, than to play this international in his honour.

'Hopefully, we can reflect some of his flamboyance in the rugby we aim to play.''

SRU chief executive Bill Watson said: ''I know from the many messages of condolence that have been expressed since Gordon's tragic death last month that there has been an overwhelming desire to recognise his unique status in the game.

''Gordon was a Scottish and British rugby icon but there is also no doubt that he enriched the lives of so many people outwith the game through his unstinting charity work and open personality. We want to recognise that ina public way and we believe supporters will too.''

Brown was capped 30 times for Scotland at lock forward, played in eight Test matches for the British Lions and made eight appearances for theBarbarians.

He died last month, aged 53, after a long fight against cancer.

The SRU has already made a donation to the bone marrow transplant unit at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and shown a film on the big screen at Murrayfield during the Scotland v Italy Lloyds TSB Six Nations' Championship match last month as a tribute to ''Broon Frae Troon''.

Tickets for the Gordon Brown international are priced at #5 and #10 for children and students and #15, #20 and #25 for adults.

They are available from the SRU Ticket Centre at Murrayfield Stadium, via the SRU's website (www.sru.org.uk), or from via the credit card hotline on 0870 909 0390.

lWasps have been bought out in a multi-million pound deal that secures their long-term future.

Administrators BDO Stoy Hayward have negotiated the purchase of the Zurich Premiership club by London Wasps Holdings Ltd, a company backed by Loftus Road plc owner Chris Wright.

Earlier this week, Loftus Road plc, which also owns Queens Park Rangers football club, called in the administrators after sustaining losses over several months.

The deal discussions were held in conjunction with the Wasps trustees, who gave their support to the bid, and they will become shareholders in the new company.

Ray Hocking, joint administrator, said: ''We are pleased to have negotiated a successful deal of the rugby club in such a short space of time.''

Multi-millionaire owner Wright took the decision earlier this year to sell his stake in the group once the right buyer had been found after being verbally abused by disgruntled QPR supporters. Offers are still being considered for QPR and the Loftus Road ground.
