An appeal is being launched to raise money for the 23-year-old rugby player, Struan Kerr- Liddell, who suffered a serious neck injury during a match last month, writes Alan Lorimer.

Struan suffered a broken neck as the scrum was engaging, while he was playing for Edinburgh club Lismore's second XV against Livingston second XV. He initially 1ost all movement in his limbs but has regained limited movement in his arms and wrists.

Malcolm Gillies, the president of Lismore said: ''Struan is remaining remarkably positive and is fully prepared for the 1ong rehabilitation process ahead.

''The Lismore and Livingston clubs are encouraging individuals, groups and rugby clubs to hold fund-raising events such as collections, raffles, race nights and sponsored events for the appeal. Lismore are also very grateful for the support being given to Struan and his parents by the SRU Murrayfield Centenary Fund.''

Struan has also received visits from Scotland internationalists Gordon Bulloch and Duncan Hodge, and messages of support from the rugby community.

Doctors, while not playing down the severity of Struan's injury, are extremely encouraged by his positive attitude and are sure that he has the courage to win the battle that lies ahead.

If you would like to organise an event to raise funds for the appeal, please contact the appeal fund organiser, John Evans of Lismore FC, on 0131 553 4196, or Malcolm Gillies, president of Lismore FC, on 0131 665 4216.
