Edinburgh based Crawford Carrick Anderson was best of the British men, in ninth place, in the World Mountain Bike Downhill Championships in Are in Sweden.

In the women's downhill Peebles Scottish champion Emma Guy was eighteenth behind four times winner Anne Caroline Chausson of France, almost a minute down with her time of 6-44.49.

Equestrianism

Pippa Funnell and Supreme Rock took the European Three-Day Event Championship today and led the British team to a 98-penalty gold-medal victory over Germany.

This was Britain's fifteenth team European title and with it came that crucial qualification for the Sydney Olympics which was lost when the team was disqualified from last year's World Equestrian Games following the positive dope test on Coral Cove.

Husband and wife duo Sandy and Shelagh Quinn were crowned Scotland's first National Mixed Foursomes champions in the inaugural tournament at Cowglen Golf Club in Glasgow yesterday. The Quinns had a combined score of 76, six over the gents par of 70. Leading scores:

Former Scottish PGA champion Brian Marchbank was #2000 richer yesterday after his one-shot victory in the Dumfries & Galloway Golf Club's 36 hole pro-am.

The former European Tour player shared the lead after his opening 68 on Saturday and his five-under-par 65 yesterday for a total of 133 was good enough to edge out Mark King by the narrowest of margins.

Larbert's Robert Ross won the Proton Coupe Cup when the championship made it's only visit to Knockhill. The 27-year-old Scot beat his nearest challenger Steve Stokoe by 2.55 and 2.53 seconds in the two rounds and take an unassailable lead in the series.

British No.1 Steve Hale finished runner-up in the Swedish Short Distance Orienteering Championships in Gotland. He was beaten into second by Johan Ivarsson who finished the 5.25km course in 26min 55sec to Hale's 27.00. Results:
