A major sculpture in the heart of the National Forest in Leicestershire, is to be built as a national memorial to the 16 children and their teacher who died in the Dunblane massacre, it was announced yesterday. Walter Bailey's work will be funded by the National Association for Primary Education, which collected more than #10,000 from individuals and primary schools after the murders on March 13, 1996, at Dunblane Primary School.
The National Forest was chosen for the sculpture - after consultation with the victims' families and their school - because of its accessibility to a large number of people. It will be completed by next spring, hopefully in time for the second anniversary of the tragedy.
National Forest spokeswoman Susan Newsome said the theme of the sculpture was not yet known, but it would be made from wood and stone. It is hoped that pupils from Dunblane primary and other schools will be involved in the installation.
