WEST of Scotland had great success in the Special Olympics National Summer Games at Portsmouth, winning an all-sports total of 80 gold, 54 silver, and 32 bronze. The most successful sport was athletics with 48 golds while swimming had 27. Team gold was won in volleyball and netball, and West also took the football title, defeating Tayside in the final.

AUSTRALIAN strong man Grant Edwards won the Scottish heavy throws contest at yesterday's Roseneath and Clynder Highland Games. He totalled 30 points to defeat Robert McKee (USA) and Ivo Degelling (Holland) who finished second equal with 27 points.

SCOTTISH schools champion Andrew Casells, from Fife, was Scotland's only winner at the British Home Countries Schools International in Dublin. He won the 1500m in 4min 06.36sec, breaking clear of his English rivals in the finishing straight to win by over a second.

Graeme Allan (Elgin) bettered the Scottish under-17 hammer record, finishing second with a lifetime best of 63.64m and also taking fourth in the shot (14.95m).

Chris Baillie (Clydebank) was a close second in the 100m hurdles in 13-22sec, just one-tenth of a second outside the Scottish record held by his brother Ross, and Ken McKeown (Ayr) cleared 1.95m for second in the high jump.

Ayr clubmate Scott Keenan recorded 49-69 for third in the 400m and led the 4 x 400m relay team to second place behind England in 3-20.28.

Lisa Callan (Glasgow) recorded the top performances in the girls' match, finishing second in the 100m (12-35), and third in the 200 (24-92). Result:

Motorsport

Aberdeen's Brian Lyall all but clinched the Mintex National Rally Championship with his fourth maximum score in five rounds when he won the Enterprise Printing National Forest Rally in Wales.

Lyall, who set fastest times in five of the six stages, dominated the event to win by two minutes eight seconds and take a 21-point lead in the championship. But the Aberdeen car dealer still refuses to celebrate the title. ''Statistically, it's still possible for a couple of drivers to catch me. Until I definitely can't be caught, the celebrations stay on ice.''

Lyall's title hopes were boosted when Dalbeattie's Murray Grierson, who led the champion-ship before the start of the Welsh event, crashed out early on when he took a hairpin too quickly and his Impreza slid down a steep bank. A spectator was also injured in the incident which forced the closure of the stage for more than an hour while an ambulance attended the injured man who was allowed home after X-rays and a check-up showed he was suffering from no more than bruising. Motorcycling

Australian Michael Doohan claimed his sixth consecutive success when he won the German 500cc Grand Prix yesterday. The world champion, riding a Honda, recovered from a poor start and pulled clear of team-mate Tadayuki Okada on the twelfth lap to record his eighth win of the season out of nine races.

Swimming

Kathy Osher edged to success in the 50 metres back-stroke at the ASA National Championship at Crystal Palace last night. The 28-year-old who competes for Ealing, finished 0.11sec ahead of joint runners-up Sarah Price - 10 years her junior - and promising Katy Sexton, just 15.

The Bill Juba award given by the British Swimming Writers to their performer of the championships went to Richard Maden of Rochdale, who added the 200m title to the 50m and 100m. The 24-year-old headed the race throughout finishing in 2min 18.85sec., two-fifths ahead of his British team-mate, Andrew Ayers of Swansea.

Graeme Smith won his 400m races to complete a free-style double. The Olympic bronze medallist over 1500m, and possibly Britain's best chance of gold at next month's European Championships, finished in 3min 55.86sec, 1.2sec ahead of Ian Wilson of Leeds.

Vicky Horner of Stockport made it third time lucky having been placed runner-up in the 200m and 800m. Ipswich's Karen Pickering, bidding for a free-style hat trick, pushed the early pace, but in the end the stamina and strength of Horner told and she finished in a personal best of 4-16.91, 1-56 ahead of Pickering.

Linda Hindmarsh added the 100m breast-stroke title to the 200m won yesterday, but once again her time of 1-12.18 was outside the qualifying time for Seville. Results:

Brian Bain (City of Aberdeen) retained his senior men's title at Saturday's Scottish National Open four-mile champion-ships which were held at Loch Lubnaig.

Bain bettered his own Scottish record by 16 seconds with his winning time of 1hr 11min 30sec.

Elma Alexander (City of Dundee) captured the women's title with a time of 1hr 20min 41sec

Ian Smith (Peterhead) won the junior men's title in 1-36-46 but his twin sister, Deborah, just failed to complete a family double in the junior women's section when she finished second in 1-53-02 in an event won by Gemma Tierney (Dundee Arnhall) in 1-32-21.

Following these champion-ships, Scotland announced their team for the British Long Distance senior championships which are due to take place on Lake Windermere on September 6, with Elma Alexander and Brian Bain selected.

The junior event will take place at Lake Coniston on September 7 and the Scottish team is Tierney, Nick Hobson (Inverness), and Scott McKenzie (Dundee Arnhall).

Croquet

Cycling

Speyside's Craig MacLean notched up unexpected victory in the 20km scratch race at the British track cycling champion- ships in Manchester - a second title and a second championship record-breaking ride for the City of Edinburgh clubman.

But MacLean had to argue the points with officials who claimed that he had stopped a lap early until he convinced them that an official had forgotten to change the lap marker with two to go.

With the leading trio lapping the field twice, MacLean then outsprinted the opposition over the final circuit to beat fellow British internationalist Jon Clay into second place by a length, clocking 23min 52.4sec.

Tennis

World No 2 Michael Chang won his second consecutive ATP Washington Classic after he came from behind to beat second-seed Czech Petr Korda 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.

The win also meant that Chang was able to claim a career-best fifth title in a single season. So far this year he has also won at Memphis in February, Indian Wells in March and Orlando and Hong Kong in April.

It was Chang's sixth win over Korda in eight matches and the Chinese-American star pocketed a winner's purse of #60,000.

Alan Mackin will fly the Scottish flag at the European 16-and-under champion-ships which open today at Queenswood Tennis Centre, Hertfordshire.

The 15-year-old from Paisley, who is seeded 9/16, is one of two British players in the boys singles and awaits the winner of today's first-round tie between Maarten Pass (Netherlands) and Leman Strauss (Israel).
