JUNIOR CUP FINAL
POLLOK goalkeeper Ronnie Lowrie will not hesitate tomorrow if he gets the chance of making a little bit of history in the OVD Scottish Junior Cup final at Motherwell's Fir Park.
Lowrie will head off to the other end of the pitch if the Central League side are awarded a penalty against cup holders Tayport. ''I scored with a spot kick in a previous round against Blantyre - and then repeated that the next week when we met Blantyre again in a league match,'' he said.
The 42-year-old Lowrie, a school teacher, is enjoying life back in the junior ranks after a lengthy spell senior. He hopes to add a cup winning medal tomorrow.
Team-mate Sean Bonner is also hoping to round off a happy week. The midfielder was 30 on Wednesday and would like a second winning medal as a present to add to the one he got two years ago when he was in the Camelon side that beat Whitburn. Manager Jim O'Donnell has no injury worries and admits: ''Tayport are a good side, but I have a good idea how they play after watching them.''
Tayport manager Dave Baikie is looking for his side to win the big one for the second season running. ''We feel at home at Fir Park having been there and played well,'' he said. ''But we know the dangers that Pollok will pose and that we cannot relax.''
Baikie is hoping that striker Steve Hutcheon can again be a winner for him in only his second Scottish cup appearance. Baikie said: ''Steve signed for us in March, coming back to the juniors from East Fife.
''He had not played in the previous rounds but was a revelation in the semi-final, when he scored both our goals as we beat Arthurlie. We have a good all-round team and a number of our players have been watched by senior clubs in our area. I have no doubt that they will again rise to the occasion.''
qFALKIRK'S famous 1957 Scottish Cup-winning team are set for a reunion - on the Ibrox pitch next Saturday.
Falkirk beat Kilmarnock in that final 40 years ago and members of both the finalists' sides from 1957 will be paraded in front of the fans before next week's final at Ibrox as invited guests of the SFA.
A spokesman for the SFA said: ''We have invited both sets of players from that final to the game and they will be given hospitality before being introduced to the crowd.''
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
