Not content with having Jackie Stewart's Grand Prix team representing the blue oval logo in F1 and Colin McRae on board the new Focus world rally car next year, Ford has extended its tartan carpet by signing top Scottish super touring car racer Anthony Reid for 1999, writes Hugh Hunston.
Glasgow-born former public schoolboy Reid, 39, will drive a Mondeo alongside Swiss Alain Menu, who is defecting from Renault. Reid's departure from Nissan comes as something of a shock as he appeared to have settled for a third season in a Primera.
Ford will entrust its currently under-achieving Mondeos to Banbury-based Prodrive and it remains to be seen if Reid and Menu can control their penchant for swopping paint samples. Reid with four sprint race wins to his credit, has led more laps, registered more pole positions and set more fastest laps than any other driver this year to lie second in the series.
Hopefully the vacancy at Nissan, alongside David Leslie, might provide an opening for the under-employed but immensely talented Fifer Bryce Wilson.
